Covers I Want to Hear Part1:

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, and through music history there are countless examples of artists barrowing the words from another artist and creating something unique or elevated.  Whitney Houston turned Dolly Parton’s “I will always love you” into the biggest vocal triumph of a decade.  Trent Reznor gave up his own song when he heard Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt”.  Sinead O’Conner turned a lesser known Prince song into the song I cried to when Tom Brady left the Patriots.  On the list goes, in some cases where the cover (greatly) surpasses its origin.

Given the infinite possibilities of cover songs I will create running installments of songs I’d like to hear performed by other artists – whether they be to tie in, give light to, or add a unique spin on already good songs

“James Connolly”  – Originally by Black 47 – Cover by:  The Hold Steady

James Connolly is a roaring song of Irish Independence with a defiant chorus and a bleeding heart.  It fucking rules, and is a song that should be on every St. Patrick’s day playlist.  The emotion and talk-sing style of the lyrics lend PERFECTLY to Craig Finn and The Hold Steady.  While you may have never heard of either of these bands-  this cover would be an incredible mashup that would bring bars to tears and riots on March 17th.

“Jigsaw Falling into Place” – Originally by Radiohead- Cover By: Justin Timberlake

I saw Radiohead debut this song at Bonnarroo almost two decades ago and remember thinking this was the closest thing to a true pop song that Radiohead has put out.  Thom Yorke eschewed his typical “Whiny shake” and strutted across the stage singing this like he was in a boy band.  The subtle sexiness (not a term associated with Radiohead) and falsetto hits when it speeds up lend perfectly to a performative JT cover to make it a true Pop hit.

“I blame Myself” – Originally by Sky Ferriera – Cover by:  Taylor Swift

This one is more of a straightforward cover.  I heard this song when it came out and my instant thought was “If Taylor Swift sang this song it would be the biggest song on the planet”  and that was BEFORE Taylor controlled every girl between 10-42, the NFL, and the US Government.  The song is poppy enough without departing into bubblegum and has a self-awareness that Taylor loves to allude to in her songs.  The girls would be crying their eyes out

“Archers” Originally by Brand New – Cover by:  Bruce Springsteen

In light of information about Brand New’s Lead singer (Jesse Lacy) this would (rightfully) never be taken on by The Boss, however the song would be fantastic if he was to reproduce.  The soaring rhythm and the “Smiths” like vibes would be incredible.  Bruce belting out “Yourrrrrr a brokennnnn thing, You’re a voice that barelyyyyy sings”  Would belong as a B side to “Born to Run”

“To Old Friends and New” – Originally by Titus Andronicus – Cover by Adele

This song is done a duet and tells the story of a dying relationship from both perspectives.  I think Adele has the chops to play both sides just fine but if she found a suitable partner in crime it could be epic.  The song burns slowly and still desperately rises to do justice to Adele vocals and emotion.  I love this song as is but get chills imagining the drama this could produce.
